TAP INTO STEM

TAP DANCE IS MUSIC, ALL MUSIC IS MATH.

Tap dance focuses on rhythm, time signatures, beats per minute and formulaic progressions, just like music. Tap dance uses complex patterns and subdivisions. From early ages, kids are performing math fractions in motion. Studies have shown that students who pursue tap dancing tend to perform higher in math, as it engages left-brain functionality.
We have over a decade of success stories, and many of our students pursue majors in Technology! Their skills learned through our tap dance programs have led them to majors like Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation at USC, entrepreneurship at Yale, statistics at UCLA, and Filmmaking at Columbia. Some of our graduates have already started their own tech-driven companies.

STEM is woven into our festival curriculums. Our Music Theory classes teach the math of music — fractions and subdivisions, supporting our students’ math studies. We use tech for our Film classes in which we teach students how to write, shoot and edit films on mobile phones. Music Production class teaches how to use tech to innovate and create music.

Some of our students have gone on to attract over 100,000 of streams on Spotify.

Our year-round internship program serves approximately 50 high school and college students a year. These are dancers who have matriculated through our programming and are hungry to learn about the production, business, and tech side of art. They are learning key entrepreneurship skills through our small business, and are tasked with utilizing technology to problem-solve and develop critical thinking. This has included website building, app development, design suite skills, and math skills including statistics,
analytics, and budgeting.

Syncopated Ladies’ National Tour has always been a fusion of Art and Tech, blending art with film through multi-media presentation. We are also utilizing tech through an app to connect to our audience members and build a bridge to the community. In each city we also do educational panel discussions and talk-backs as well as free community classes and complimentary tickets for underserved communities.
